Inspired by the circle of sustainability

Sustainability is a foundational ethos of the operation at Drury Lane Estate. The beginning of our story has been (and will continue to be) a labour of love bringing the estate back to life creating a legacy for our children and grandchildren in years to come.

Sustainable considerations on the estate include everything from maintaining biodiversity in our vineyards, ensuring soil health, conserving water, managing pests and disease, to waste disposal, air quality and fuel consumption.

Water Conservation

Drury Lane Estate has a total of six dams on the property that feed our efficient zoned drip irrigation system. This newly installed zoned system minimises waste and allows for more accurate and timely delivery of water and nutrients directly to the grape vines and soil. There is also a water entitlement attached to the estate that can be used when supply levels in the dams are low.

Ecosystem

Because our vineyard is in a rural area, managing it involves caring for not only our vines but also the surrounding habitat. Our vineyards are designed with green corridors to ensure that wildlife have access to the bush and water. We use netting to protect the grapes from birds where necessary and avoid planting around existing trees and away from waterways and vernal pools.

Energy Use

We have adopted a number of energy-saving practices such as night harvesting, which reduces the need for energy-intensive refrigeration at the winery and limiting the passes that tractors and other equipment make through our vineyard to save fuel, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit soil compaction.  We also intend to move towards Solar power on the estate soon.

Waste Reduction

Common practices include: recycling paper, plastic, cardboard and glass; creating
compost areas; and converting grape pomace and lees (byproducts of winemaking) to compost for use in our vineyards and landscaping.  We re-use oak barrels and use recyclable materials in the renovations of the buildings on site.
